Levanto and the Cinque Terre, Italy
June 5 June 5 , 2010
On Saturday Denise was feeling better, so we spent the day in our "hometown" of Levanto. While our laundry was agitating, we relaxed under umbrellas at the lido. The water was calm and warm that day, unlike the huge surf earlier in the week. There was a raised boardwalk along the seafront, with Victorian homes and castle ruins above. Clouds rolled through once in a while, but it was plenty warm. The streets of Levanto were lined with colorful shuttered apartments. One morning Neil hiked up to Legnaro, which we could see across the valley when we looked out our window. The narrow streets typified the ancient villages scattered along the hills. Our hotel is in the lower left.

On our last day in the Cinque Terre, we went south to Riomaggiore and walked to Manarola along the famous Via Dell Amore. We hung out at the harbor for a while, watching locals jump from rocks. We had a quiet lunch ( more anchovies), then hit the trail. After one look back we headed for Manarola (in the distance). The famous trail scales the cliffs, and in some places it's on top of the train. Notice the two rows of openings on this rampart. Of course we had to take a few good pictures of us along the way. We just spent enough time in Manarola to watch this boat getting launched. The harbor had natural pools formed by the rocky terrain. We took a boat north to Vernazza, where we joined the rest of the world, and went swimming.
